7 Things To Consider When Switching Jobs
By Mikey 777
I’ve come to the conclusion that nobody is happy with the amount of money that they make at work. At least I’ve never met anyone who is. However, the grass ain’t always greener on the other side of the job pool, so if you’re thinking about switching jobs, here are some things to take into consideration. Money Ain’t Everything I know that the lure of more money can sometimes tempt you into taking a job you normally wouldn’t. After all, isn’t money the main reason we all have jobs and go to work? Just remember that more money doesn’t necessarily mean more happiness. There are other things to consider when switching careers. Check Out The Benefits Package Benefits such as health insurance, 401k, profit sharing, and other employee programs can sometimes make up for lower pay. Compare your current benefits package with the one your perspective employer is offering. If benefits like health insurance are noticeably more expensive, then your so-called raise that you’re getting by switching jobs just went right out the window. Plus, you want to remember that most employers require 3-6 months of employment before you can obtain health benefits, so keep that in mind. How Is The Commute? Here’s a good thing to consider. Will you be driving further to your new job than from where you work now? With gas prices soaring, a short commute can save you a considerable amount of money. Of course, you could always take drastic measures like buying a more fuel efficient car, or moving closer to work to save on gas, but that’s an awful lot to risk on a brand new job. Take A Tour Of Your New Workplace This may sound kinda strange, but taking a tour of your new workplace can save you future headaches. Touring the new workplace before taking a new job can help you gauge whether or not you’ll fit in, will give you a chance to see working conditions first hand, and can give you an idea of the other workers’ morale. If you see a lot of sad faces, chances are you’ll be one of ‘em if you take the job. Are There Good Advancement Opportunities? A great question to ask any perspective employer is whether or not there is room for advancement. Ask about merit raises, salary increase intervals, and where on the career ladder you will be starting versus where you want to be. You can even ask for an estimated time for obtaining your ideal position in the new company. Nobody wants to be stuck in a dead end job, even if you are making a little more money. Meet Your New Boss Never take on a new job without meeting your future supervisor. This is most likely a person you will be working with each and every day, so make sure you click. The person giving you the job interview isn’t necessarily going to be your immediate supervisor, so find him/her, meet ‘em, and shake their hand! Don’t Switch Jobs Out Of Anger Switching jobs out of anger can really put you in a bind. You’ll most likely end up with a new job that you hate, as you will probably carry the anger that you had toward your previous job on to your new workplace. Not only that, but you may end up having to work for the first company that offers you a job because of financial difficulties, and you’ll end up quitting your job again. If you have a bad attitude when starting a new job, you won’t last very long. The best advice is to settle your differences with your current employer before moving on. Following this advice will help ease the pain of starting a new job. It always sucks being the new person at work, but at least you’ll know what you’re getting yourself into. Like I said, the grass ain’t always greener….
