Education vs. Experience--Who Should Get Paid More?

By Mikey 777

The working world is a very diverse place. We have those that have worked the same job for 20 years, and then we have people who with college degrees, most of whom are just starting out. The worker with the most experience, in some situations may not have needed any schooling for their job, even though it was a skilled position. Back then, most employees were trained in the workplace, not at a college. Society has changed, however, and a lot of emphasis is placed on whether or not you have a degree or have had formal technical training. Both people are hired to perform the same job. So who should get paid more?

Let's start off describing the average college grad. This guy (or girl) is fresh out of school, certificate in hand. They've spent years training for the chance to show the world what they can do. Higher education has taught them theories, given them ideas and structure, and this person is now well versed and considered an expert in his or her field. There is no doubt in my mind that this degree was difficult to obtain. On paper, everything is perfect. The school certifies that the graduate knows what they need to in order to perform; great confidence (as well as a good chunk of cash) will be invested in this person based on what this piece of paper says. We have been taught that education trumps experience every time, and should be rewarded accordingly. Things will change when the chips are down.

I'm not here to knock higher education. It's been my experience that college grads know what they're talking about and how things are supposed to work. The problem is that not everything works out in real life like it does on paper. This is where the experienced worker is irreplaceable.

Who would you rather go to when there's a major problem? Someone who can tell you how to fix it or someone who can actually fix it? I'll take the person with the hands on experience every time. The seasoned veteran has probably encountered the problem thousands of times during their career and knows the best way to handle it, even though they might not have a piece of paper to back up their expertise. Experience is an invaluable asset, but is all too often given a back seat to education.

A college graduate should be paid well for their services. They've no doubt earned it through countless hours of study and preparation, but something is lacking: real world experience. Entry level experience deserves entry level compensation in my opinion. I've known many mechanics just out of school that graduated as Senior Master Technicians and can barely change a headlight. Yet they are making thousands more per year and have better credibility than the guy who can swap out engines in his sleep; all because of a piece of paper. Think about that example next time you get your brakes fixed. Scary isn't it.

This article is about the average person and his or her struggles in the workplace. I realize there are jobs that would be impossible without a college education. I think society views the typical American worker with only a high school diploma as a second class citizen. Workplace equality should be a higher priority among today's management teams, but as we all know, anything can be fixed with a college degree.
