Get A Job Interview Without Leaving The House

By Mikey 777

Now that we’re in the information age, searching for jobs has evolved into a much simpler process than when I was young, yet many people are using the same old methods for trying to find a quality job. And they aren’t getting good results. Here are some tips for obtaining a job interview (or even a job) without ever having to leave home.

1. Don’t Use Newspaper Classified Ads

The local newspaper used to be the place everyone checked when searching for work. Well that day is dead, my friend. I’ve found that the jobs in local classified ads tend to be jobs that nobody wants, or jobs with high turn over rates. Not only that, but I’ve seen a large decline in the amount of jobs listed in the local paper, which also means that employers are looking for employees using other methods. Jobs listed in the classifieds also have more workers applying for the same position (competition). Ditch the paper. You’ll be better off.

2. Know The Companies In Your Industry

This can really help make your job hunting experience easier. By being familiar with the companies in your industry, you’re not limiting yourself solely to online job sites. I’ve gotten work with a couple companies that hadn’t even posted a job opportunity, and hired me just because they liked my resume and experience. Find a company that you would like to work for and submit an application or resume online, even if they’re not looking for workers. You may be pleasantly surprised!

3. Create/Update Your Resume

Unless you want to pay someone, you can create your own resume for free using MS Word. There’s an article here that tells you how to do just that, quickly and easily. Just about every job requires a resume nowadays, so get one started. The simpler, the better. The great thing about creating a resume on your computer is that once you get it the way you want it, you can post it on job sites (for free) and employers will call you, instead of the other way around.

4. Submit Applications/Resumes Online

Most people who search for work probably know about this already, but there are some workers from earlier generations who aren’t familiar with searching for work on the web. Just about every company has a website these days, and also a link to an online job application. I’ve written a previous post outlining the best job search sites on the internet, so check it out and get those applications flowing. Much easier than driving around all day looking for work.

5. Buy A Fax Machine

I’ve got one of those all-in-one printer, scanner, fax machine deals from Wal Mart and I absolutely love it. I think it cost me $80. This will save time and gasoline, as you can fax over any certificates or pertinent information to a perspective employer without having to leave home. You don’t need any special equipment either. Just hook the machine up to your phone jack and computer and away you go. It’s the most useful electronic device in the house!

6. Get A Separate Email Account For Work Searches

You don’t want to have to sift through mounds of spam to find a job offer, so the best advice is to set up a separate email account just for job hunting. Any free account from Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail will do. This is also a good idea because some of those job search sites like to send ‘newsletters’ quite often, and they will clutter up your main inbox.

7. Use The Telephone

The good old telephone can be a handy tool when looking for work. Calling companies to inquire about employment opportunities may be tedious work, but it sure beats driving around in the hot sun all day. Calling a company can give you an idea of the company’s professionalism and attitude towards their employees, just by listening to the person on the other end of the line. If he/she seems happy, it may be worth pursuing a job there. You can also ask about things like benefits, which will help you decide whether or not it’s worth your time filling out an application.

I’m one of those people who doesn’t like change too much, but I think that new technology has made finding work easier than it’s ever been. I don’t miss having to take public transportation just to fill out job applications, like I did when I was a teenager. Be thankful for the internet!
